Heatwave Firegrates have been keeping New Zealand homes cozy since the 1970s. Built to last, throw more heat into your room, and save on fuel. The perfect fit for your open fireplace!
Why Choose a Heatwave Firegrate?
Built from Corten Steel
Not all steel is created equal.
Corten steel is known for its strength and durability in high-heat environments. It forms a protective surface layer that helps resist deterioration, meaning your Firegrate stands up to years of use without burning or rusting out!
Solid base. No exposed edges. No weak points.
This is a Firegrate designed for real fires.
Throws Out More Heat
The hottest part of any fire is where airflow meets flame and fuel.
Our front-feed airflow design draws air in from the front of the grate, concentrating the hottest burn where it matters most. The result?
More radiant heat into your room and less wasted up the chimney.
A better burn. A warmer home.
Understated, Timeless Style
The natural finish of Corten steel develops a rich, warm patina over time — complementing both traditional and modern fireplaces.
The face of each grate is sandblasted and finished in a tough black powder coating.
The finish gives it a sharp, understated look that suits both traditional and contemporary fireplaces while adding an extra layer of durability.
Simple. Strong. No fuss.
Easy to Clean
Simple matters.
Just pull the grate forward, tip it gently, and empty the ash into your fireplace or a suitable container.
Safety Tip: Always ensure any coals or ash are cold before disposal. It can retain heat for days!

Dear Belinda Overnight delivery from Greymouth. Way above expectations. I installed the Classic grate straight away and enjoyed an estimated 50% improvement in the efficiency of the fire. Previously an open fire without any grate. Fire is easier to set and is safer. Very happy to be named and quoted
Thank you.

About Heatwave Firegrates |
||
Heatwave Firegrates are proudly manufactured by Hyway Manufacturing, a New Zealand family-owned business established in 1987. While many know Hyway for products supplied to the contracting and transport industries, craftsmanship has always been at the core of what we do. When we took over the production of Heatwave Firegrates in the 1990s, we saw the strength in the original design and the opportunity to refine it for modern homes. Over the years, we’ve carefully developed the grate while staying true to the principles that made it so effective in the first place: better airflow, stronger construction, and more heat where it belongs. Today, every Heatwave Firegrate continues to be built with that same practical thinking, just with improved materials and finishing to match. The History of Heatwave FiregratesThe original Heatwave Firegrate was designed by L M Harrison after a simple observation. In May 1950, while on holiday in the Waikato, he noticed how well wood burned on a traditional curved brick fire base. The airflow was excellent, and the heat radiated beautifully into the room. But there were problems. So, in the 1960s, when building his own family home with an open fireplace, L M Harrison set out to improve the concept. He designed and built a Firegrate that replicated the airflow and heat performance of the curved brick base, but in a stronger, more practical form. The result was the first Heatwave Firegrate. It held logs securely. In 1968, production began for the 1969 season. Around 2,000 grates were sold in the first year alone, quickly earning a reputation for performance and reliability in homes across New Zealand. Decades later, the numbers may have changed but the outcome hasn’t. Warm fires. |
